with a deep black exterior. Large bowls like this were used for serving taro or yam puddings on special occasions such as going to war, initiations, weddings and the like. This bowl is high-walled and carved in the shape of a bird. At one end a bird's head is visible flanked by wings in relief, the other end shows a stylized tail with fins and a fish. On closer inspection the bird's head appeard to be connected to a stylised diminutive torso with protruding bent arms, the hands holding a fish, its tail balancing on the torso's scroll.
