PNG, Ramu River, rare shield, 19th century
stone carved oval shield, the top carved with a raised wedge and a design of eyes, zoomorphic forms, circle motives and an anthropomorphic face. The plane decorated with two larger carved diamond shaped forms with a star- and diamond shape within, both with indentations on the outer rim. The shield painted with natural pigments in black, white and red. Collection of Fred Carasso (1899-1969) an Italian born famous Dutch sculptor and collector of fine Arts, thence by descent. Ex-collection Carel van Lier. The early label number 32 suggests according to grandson Bas van Lier, that this shield was acquired somewhere in the 1920’s. At the back written numbers and the remnants of another old label
