Ivory Coast, Guro, face mask, ca. 1930-1940,

with characteristic pointy nose and small protruding mouth. With written numbers in chalk on the reverse and writing. For masks of the same age and probably the same carver see: 'Die Kunst der Guro Elfenbeinkuste', Museum Rietberg Zurich, Fischer and Homberger, 1985, page 82 and 83, figures 2-5. Mask no. 5 also has a washed surface. These masks are in the collection of Basel, ex. Sammlung Himmelheber and other collections. Collection of John Rädecker (1885-1956), the Dutch sculptor who designed the sculpture for the Dutch WW2 monument on the Dam Square, Amsterdam. He was a friend of Carel van Lier and could have bought from or traded Tribal Art objects with him.
