Ivory Coast, Dan Kran, face mask, late 19th to early 20 C.,

well shaped lips, tubular eyes flanking the small nose beneath a slanting forehead plane circumlined by 'horns', several holes on the lower periphery of the mask. The present mask has an exceptional quality and age. The weathered wood and grooved upper lip in combination with a layered medium brown to black patina ensures an age up to at least one hundred years. Weathered through time which lends this mask an almost stone-like appearance. The physiognomy still shows the work of a master carver.

L. 21,5 cm. on a custom made stand.

Provenance: Jan Visser, Amsterdam, ca. 1982. British private collection before 1982.
