Elk bezet met een otoliet; gehoorssteentjes van vissen, opgebouwd uit dunne kalklagen. Ze bevinden zich in het evenwichtsorgaan en geven de vis informatie over waar ze zich in het water bevinden. Otolieten werden ook wel visparels genoemd en werden door vissers en zeelui als amulet gedragen om hen te beschermen tegen stormen.

Gold cufflinks. Each set with an otolith; hearing stones of fish, made up of thin layers of calcium carbonate. They are located in the vestibular system and give the fish information about their location in the water. Otoliths were also called fish pearls and were worn by fishermen and sailors as an amulet to protect them from storms.
