Moluccas, a rare Kai Islands, wooden male ancestor figure, 19th Century,

in a squatting posture, disproportionate large head with hollowed circular eyes, small and flat triangular nose, reversed ears, free carved arms and legs in a continuous configuration in front of an elementary torso with spine. On the back is written 'Tanil Tana' and on the bottom partly written in white A 2.. The bottom partly cut.

H. 37 cm.

Provenance: Acquired during the KNAG (Royal Dutch Geographical Society) expedition to the Kai Islands 1889-1890. Bestowed to the N.K.V. (Dutch Colonial Society). Published: C.M. Pleyte, 1893, Ethnographische Atlas van de Zuidwester- en Zuidooster-Eilanden, plate XVIII, nr. 8; L. F. van Gent a.o. (1924), Indië in woord en beeld/ Pictorial Netherlands East-Indies, plate 75. This figure was most probably gifted to C.T. Bertling on his departure as director from the Indisch Instituut in 1961.
