A pair of Roman Terra Chiara oil lamps, 1st-4th century CE.
Two Roman Terra Chiara oil lamps, which both have a handle at the rear. The discus shows a well-known Old Testament biblical scene, referred to as 'The Spies of Canaan'. It shows two men carrying a massive cluster of grapes, tied to a stick which the men carry on their shoulders. The shoulder features a motif of vine-scroll pattern. The second discus shows an Old Testament narrative scene from the Book of Daniel, where three Hebrew youths stand before an angelic figure. The shoulder surrounding the central scene shows an alternating rosette and floral pattern.
