A pair of Jean-Joseph Chapuis 'Etruscan' fauteuils, Empire. Early 19th century. Ebonised and parcel gilt, on gilded brass feet and with a woven cane seat.
These fauteuils are an early example of the use of bent and laminated wood in furniture making. The Chapuis firm of Brussels created many versions of this chair. (One of these chairs is restored and fortified with metal support)
